The 31st ordinary summit of the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) opened here Friday, with the Ivorian crisis top on the agenda.
Eleven leaders of the 15-nation organisation, present at the opening ceremony, were from Benin, Cote d`Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal, Togo and host Burkina Faso.
The presidents of The Gambia, Cape Verde, Sierra Leone and Guinea, were absent.
Also present were ECOWAS Executive Secretary Mohamed Ibn Chambas, a representative of the African Union (AU), Rodolphe Adada, as well as the Ivorian Prime Minister Charles Konan Banny and the UN Secretary-General`s envoy in Cote d`Ivoire, Pierre Schori.
Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo arrived Burkinabe capital late Thursday ahead of the summit, which was postponed from late December because of army-police clashes in the Burbinabe Capital.
The meeting is expected to discuss the reports of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council on regional security, and the Council of Ministers meeting held in Ouagadougou in December.
