Morocco will soon open a new embassy in Lome-Togo, according to an announcement on Twitter from the Togolese Foreign Affairs Minister, Robert Dussey.
“I thank His Majesty, King of Morocco, and the Moroccan government for the decision to open an embassy of the Kingdom in Togo,” Dussey said in a statement.
The announcement comes a few months after the closure of the Togolese Embassy in Tripoli due to the current crisis in Libya. The Togolese embassy also represented several countries across the continent, including North African countries.
Togo has already established an embassy in Rabat for several years. The opening of Morocco’s embassy will empower diplomatic relations as well as trade exchanges between the two countries.
On October 26, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Nasser Bourita, met with Dussey in Kigali, on the sidelines of the 2nd ministerial preparatory meeting prior to the next European Union-African Union Summit.
In January, Togo reportedly expressed its full support for Morocco's sovereignty over its southern provinces.
“It is very important for us to tell everyone that your sovereignty over the Sahara region is total,” the Togolese FM highlighted
Togo and Morocco have enjoyed gradually evolving ties over the last few years.
