Togo's Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) Monday called the political parties to order, saying they have been "actively campaigning for the elections", in violation of the electoral laws. "Despite the calls to order issued to some political parties, CENI regretfully notes that instead the phenomenon tends to increase, which may ultimately lead to heightened tension that neither the people nor the political actors would like to see," the electoral body said in a statement.
CENI has told the parties to immediately stop campaigning, urging them to comply with the law, and reminded them that the electoral campaign period will officially begin on 28 September at midnight, and will be closed on 12 October at midnight.CENI threatened to take action against any political party or candidate who would defy its order.
Early legislative preliminaries will take place on 14 October.
